Black Cartographies
2025- , silkscreened prints on cotton rag paper, dimensions variable: 15 x 22, 12 x 26 inches

What would happen if a graph was used as a mapping tool to visualize the dualities of object association to reorient our definitions of history and self within a space? Instead of it being a tool to find an answer, it repositions itself to ask us a question. Black Cartographies is a growing series that contemplates the mathematical use of graphs. Generally, they assist us in analyzing, solving problems and visualizing data. Yet, what might happen if a graph was instead used as a mapping tool to plot and reorient us towards a different spatial understanding of history and the Black diasporic self? In these diagrams, I question what kind of knowledge networks are already predicting what we know. How can these maps be used as navigational systems that refuse their original function or predetermined usage?
